In mei memoriam facietis...

I was very interested to read this yesterday by the Bishop of London (whom I was privileged to meet in 2003). I thought it wise, timely and pastoral. That the use of the new translation of the Roman Missal in the Church of England is ''a pastoral unkindness to the laity and a serious canonical matter'' is without question. The 1662 Book of Common Prayer ought to be the standard for Anglican liturgical praxis, not Common Worship, or the modern Roman liturgical books.

  1. Since when has any Anglican church in London used the Book of Common Prayer in its entirety? They either use the awful Common Worship or the Roman Missal or a compilation of their own that fits guitars and arm waving. For the Bishop of London to suggest that the remaining relatively orthodox congregations should keep using the old Roman Missal rather than the updated one is simply silly.

  2. The Bishop of London has gone up in my estimation with this ad clerum.

  3. His Lordship's being a dick about this. I read his address on another website. He blathered on and on about how Rome and BXVI have distanced themselves from the Anglicans and Common Worship by changing the translation of the Mass. For years he's ignored the many parishes in his diocese that used the Sacramentary. Now it's not okay to use the new Roman Missal just because the translation of et cum spiritu tuo and the Gloria doesn't match up with the drivel some ecumenical consultative body cooked up forty years ago? The only reason why many Anglican priests in the Anglo-Papalist clique stay with the C of E anyway is for the manse and the pension. He knows he's impotent to do anything about the situation.

I heard Mass in the new translation for the first time today. While nowhere near as poetic as the Prayer Book (what contemporary liturgy could rival one of the three pillars of the modern English language?), the translation was a heck of a lot better than that 1973 monosyllabic monster anglophone Catholics bowed under for forty years.

This new translation is one more step towards pushing back all the damage postmodernism done to Roman Catholicism. The A-C vicars should just thumb their noses and do as they please -- the pomos did a number on their tribe as well.

  4. Because the Bishop is suggesting that Anglcans should adhere to heold Missal simply because we Catholics have moved on. Thatnis manifestly silly.

  5. I lived in London for a couple of years and couldn't find a single Anglican parish that used the 1662 BCP. Are there any? I would love to know if I ever get to visit London again.

  6. "...the altered circumstances created by the Pope’s invitation to Anglicans to join the Ordinariate..."
What exactly does this mean. Anglicans have always been free to become Roman Catholics; what difference does the Ordinariate make? (Forget Anglican "patrimony" - they couldn't care less.)
